The pretty port town of Lymington is steeped in Georgian and seafaring history, with cobbled streets, an old quay, and boats bobbing on the Solent. Famous for its nautical heritage, Lymington has no less than three marinas and a bustling town centre, with a market every Saturday and an open-air sea water pool. Sailors can hire boats or book a cruise across to the Isle of Wight, or a trip to view the three iconic Needles rocks, and unusual sands of Alum Bay in all their multi-coloured glory.
Sitting right at the edge of the New Forest National Park, this area is full of natural trails, from open heathland to wooded forests. Walk, cycle or arrange a hack on horseback to view the wildlife up close: native ponies graze here, and children will love spotting them. After the horses have been settled and thanked, take the smalls to the nearby National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, home to more than 250 classic vehicles including bikes, a double-decker bus, and the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car.
